Soccer Conditioning:
If you are a youth soccer coach or the parent of a young soccer player, it is important to understand all aspects of conditioning that come into play throughout a soccer game. There is much more than the “cardio vascular” aspect that usually comes to mind. Energy level, muscular and neurological (nerves) demands all come into play.
It has been common in recent years for both coaches and parents alike to focus on sending their young players off for a 20 – 30 minute run and call that “conditioning”. This type of exercise isn’t going to develop the power and speed necessary to really excel in the game as it has evolved over recent years. The long conditioning runs of the past can lead to a slower, weaker player and most importantly can lead to overuse injuries.
The game of soccer requires short bursts of energy mixed with short periods of recovery. Jogging at a steady pace without the stopping, starting, intermittent and sharp direction changes does not replicate the key components that a player need to master to be effective on the soccer field…(click here to read more)
Youth Soccer Conditioning:
Are you familiar with “Fartlek”?
Developed in the 1930’s, Fartlek training is a very effective form of continuous and interval training derived from Swedish term for “Speed Play”. Fartlek prepares players to vary their intensity levels widely from a light jog to an intense sprint. It has become a proven method of training that allows the athlete to run whatever distance and speed they wish. Both the aerobic and anaerobic energy systems are targeted in this type of extremely effective training.
Incorporating Fartlek into a youth soccer conditioning program can be one of the most effective training secrets that produces real results. In the Elite Soccer Power Training, this these types of training and drills are utilized during weeks 7 – 10.

5 Tips to Prevent ACL Tears In Girls Soccer:
ACL Tears are one of the most feared soccer injuries. Both parents and coaches need to focus on measures that can minimize the occurance of ACL tears in female soccer players.
Over the last 10 Years the popularity of Girls soccer has skyrocketed in North America. With this growth in the sport, there has also been an increase in anterior cruciate ligament tears as well.
It’s shocking to think that a female soccer player as young as 12 can experience a serious ACL tear. There are many “theories” as to why girl soccer players seem to be more prone to this injury. Some of these include the belief that the ligament itself in weaker in females than it is in males, muscle imbalances, poor landing and coordination. Unfortunately there is a huge amount of mis-information that can be found on the internet, in magazines and television regarding soccer conditioning and fitness training for soccer.
For your child to achieve success on the field they will need to improve their strength, power, speed and overall level of physical fitness. Here are a few common myths to beware of in such a pursuit:
Myth: Crunches and Sit ups will strengthen and tone a athlete’s stomach and build their “core”.
Truth: Crunches, Sit-ups, and the use of abdomin machines are the LEAST effective way to develop the core. In many cases they can do more harm than good and can increase the pressure on the soft tissue in the player’s back.
