Football Premier League Preview – 28th and 30th December
During football’s crazy Christmas period Mondays become Saturdays with a full afternoon programme for spread bettors not only on Boxing Day, but also two days later. There are some thrilling fixtures to bring 2009 to a close but the pick promises to be the West London derby between Chelsea and Fulham.
By Chelsea’s own high standards they’ve hit a relative rough patch of late which saw them win just one from six in all competitions before Christmas. December has been much kinder to Roy Hodgson’s Fulham and spread bettors to have bought the team’s match win index throughout the month. They went unbeaten before Christmas Day, secured their spot in the second stage of the UEFA Cup and, it’s fair to say, demolished Manchester United 3-0. However, buyers of Chelsea’s win index and supremacy spread for this meeting will note that the Blues are still yet to lose at Stamford Bridge this season, despite being defeated three times away. The Cottagers’ solid home record has kept them in the top half, but spread buyers of their win index may be concerned by a poor away record for the season which includes just a single win.
Since Fulham’s return to the top flight in 2001they have only managed to defeat Chelsea once, thanks to a Luis Boa Morte strike in a 1-0 victory in 2006. Chelsea supremacy spread buyers will be pleased that this has not happened at the Bridge in that time and that the corresponding fixture last year saw Chelsea win 3-1. However, there’s reason for sellers of Chelsea’s win index to have confidence as Fulham drew here in the previous two seasons. Sporting Index’s bookings index spread may automatically attract more buyers than sellers due to this match’s billing as a local derby, but history suggests these spread bettors could be in for a nervous time. No cards were shown when the teams met at Craven Cottage earlier in the year and the bookings spread make-up has averaged at just 1.7 over the last seven meetings.
The following day sees Liverpool face Aston Villa at Villa Park. These two teams have shared similar fortunes to those of Chelsea and Fulham, with the Reds underachieving all season, while under Martin O’Neill, the West Midlands side have ramped up their claim for fourth spot in the last several weeks with five consecutive wins leading up to December 25th. A glance at the results of meetings between the teams over the last few years might cheer buyers of the total goals and goal minutes spreads with a seeming tendency towards high-scoring outcomes, particularly the last two matches, which featured 9 goals between them. However, on closer inspection, there’s a big case for spread sellers as we realise that two of the last three matches between the sides at Villa Park have been goalless and only one match here since 2003 has seen more than three goals.
