Football Shirts Reflect Creativity and Loyalty
The traditional football shirt worn by players since the early 20th century has undergone quite a few changes over the years. The original jerseys were made from tough cotton to protect the players from rough play. With new rules came less need for the heavy shirts and a shift to more lightweight materials was made. As technology has advanced, the design and fabric of the football shirt has changed quite a bit.
Football has always been a game that invited creativity and bright colors in its shirts. Teams like to display their originality through innovative designs that feature large blocks of color, stripes, or unusual patterns. Most teams create entirely new collections of jerseys for each season. There are usually two home jerseys, two away jerseys, and a special jersey for the goalie. That means that there are several opportunities for a team to mix things up and create new looks for almost every game.
Football fans have always appreciated the fashion aspect of football shirts. When mass production made replica jerseys available for purchase by fans they were instantly a popular fashion item. The brightly colored replica jerseys are available complete with player’s names and numbers on the back, which helps to make the fans feel like they are truly a part of the game.
Football shirt designs have changed over the years. Older jerseys had collars and buttons, while more current designs have lost both. The addition of sponsor logos to the shirts help provide revenue to the team and advertising power for the sponsor.
Men, women, and children all seem to enjoy showing their team pride through wearing their favorite football shirts. Since the shirts are designed to keep players comfortable during the game, they are also excellent for fans to wear while exercising or playing amateur sports. In fact, it is not uncommon for smaller amateur leagues for children and adults to order a team’s jersey in bulk to wear as their own team shirt.
Lately there has been something of a trend toward old fashioned football shirts. Several teams have home or alternate shirts that include laces, buttons, and collars and hearken back to the old days of stiff cotton shirts. At the same time, many teams are also experimenting with even more unusual patterns and designs to make their football shirt stand out.
Regardless of the team, the football shirt is the only really customizable portion of a football team’s kit. It represents the team’s colors and provides player information for the referees. With the availability of football shirts and the worldwide appeal of the sport, football shirts are a common sight on most streets these days. As long as teams continue to inspire their fans, the football shirt will always be a standard necessity for anyone who supports a specific team. A football shirt is a conversation starter and a silent indication of who the wearer is and what the wearer stands for.
