Soccer: Defense and Substitutions
As soccer is rapidly gaining fans in the United States, many high school students are looking into playing in college soccer teams through athletic sports scholarships.
In competitive soccer matches, with teams comprising 11 members, up to three substitutes are allowed. The rules of the competition must state the maximum number of players allowed to be named as a substitute, which may be anywhere between three and seven. In non-competitive matches, the use of substitutes must be determined before the match begins, except in friendly international matches, where no more than six substitutes may be brought on.
In general, the most tired players should be substituted. Their substitutes should be well trained to fill in the same role. Coaches usually avoid substituting defensive players as much as possible to prevent the disruption of the defensive structure of the team. They often opt to replace ineffective attackers or midfielders in order to freshen up the attacking line in order to score more goals.
High school soccer players need to be aware that the standard of play at college level is very high. It is advisable for students to attend a few games to determine the actual intensity of the collegiate game.
