What is known as the Aggregate system in football (soccer)?
There was a match between Manchester United and AC Milan last week in the Champions league knockout round… Manchester United (Away) won 3-2 with AC Milan (Home). How much does AC Milan require to win the 2nd leg(aggre.) of the match?
The aggregate system is a system whereby two teams play two matches against each other, with one match played at each home stadium. The scores are added (aggregate score) to find a winner.
It isn’t done in all competitions.
In the Champions League, if the aggregate score is the same, the team that has scored the most away goals wins the tie, and if this can’t separate them a further 30 minutes (extra time) is played.
If they’re still even, the tie is drawn and a penalty shoot-out determines who goes through to the next round.
In the Manchester United / A.C. Milan match, A.C Milan need to win the second match by two goals, unless they score three, in which case a one goal win will lead to extra time, or unless they score four, in which case a one goal win will be enough for victory.
The aggregate system isn’t used for the final of the competition.
